Ches's Fish & Chips/ 9 Freshwater Rd.
The tastes of Newfoundland and Labrador might be vast, however, you'd be hard pressed to argue against Fish and chips as the taste of St. John's.
Since 1951, Ches's Famous Newfoundland Fish and Chips has been serving up the tradition just the way Newfoundlanders like it. Crisp golden batter, fresh cut chips, and delicious Ches's choice cod fish.
What is Ches's Choice Cod? It's a reflection of the commitment Ches's has to serving only the best quality fish to be found. Perhaps it is an extension of the commitment to quality first began by Ches Barbour moe than 50 years ago. Ches would get up each morning, steam out the narrows of St. John's harbour, catch the fish he needed for the day, come back to shore and fillet it. By noon, you'd find Ches behind the counter cooking and serving the day's catch.
Freshwater Road, in the heart of downtown St. John's, is the flagship store. Known by many as the Original Ches's, it's really the oldest existing Ches's. Still the favourite of many, this restaurant offers the casual quaintness that has been part of the Ches's experience since its very beginnings.
