Top Five Wine Lists in Nova Scotia

1. Well, Seven to start. There are only two restaurants in Atlantic Canada that have the second level of the Wine Spectator award, Seven in Halifax (and Bianca's in St. John’s Newfoundland), and there are only 600 in the world! This is a great for our city to have!

2. Onyx. Onyx has close to 300 wines and they are constantly updating the list. You will not find a wine at Onyx that is listed but not available; they do an excellent job of having every wine on their list in house. This is very difficult to do trust me! When you have 300 wines on your list at any given time you can be out of 15 or more. Onyx will change their list daily if they have to so they have all the wines advertised. They have the Basic Wine Spectator award, which is not easy either.

3. Five Fishermen of course! We have the only Wine Spectator-award winning wine list (1st Level) in the provinces that features an entire page of Nova Scotia Wines. Our belief is the best food and wine experiences happen when you pair the wine of the land with food of the land. All of our produce is sourced locally when available and when paired with the local wines it makes very an incredible experience. When you’re in Tuscany you have the local dishes with the local wines so why should it be any different in Nova Scotia?

4.Saege Wade Dhooge (sommelier and manager) does an excellent job of selecting exclusive wines that no one else has. He will source out wines and buy them all for Saege and Sweet Basil. We call him the wine hog!!! But his wine list at Saege is exclusive. You will try wines their that you have never heard of before. And the staff is very knowledgeable so they can inform the guests. They also have a Wine Spectator Award 1st Level.

5. Charlotte Lane. I have to say Charlotte's Lane in Shelburne has an amazing wine list!! Roland does not buy into the whole Wine Spec thing!! However he could win. His wine list is tailored to his food menu and he has a surprising number of single vineyard wines that are very hard to come by in Halifax and next to impossible in very little towns like his. But somehow he gets them!!

Parting words? All of these restaurants in my opinion have great food and they all have tailored their wine lists to their food menus.
